The Project

 

Ram Precision was selected to build and assemble the machine you see in the picture.  This machine was to compact a powder into a pre-determined size, then add two leads into each side of the finished part. 

 

Highly Accurate Small Parts

 

This project involved quite a few different skill sets in order for us to complete it successfully.  There were many high precision parts that we fabricated, mostly of a small size.  We used different types of technology to achieve this – high speed milling, small hole drilling, high precision grinding, close tolerance wire EDM and a RAM EDM.  If we did not invest in these high accuracy technologies, we could not have delivered on this project.

 

This project was not just mechanical components, as we had to build and wire all the electronics intelligence imbedded in this machine as well. This included mounting all the sensors and air cylinders since there were moving parts too.  We had to drill holes as small as .016” in diameter, with a location tolerance of +/- .0001” and a size tolerance of +/- .0002”.  These are just some small examples of the high accuracy work required to build this machine.  We were providing an intricate turnkey solution, so we had to provide an overall solution greater than just machining parts. 

 

The Biggest Challenge – Final Assembly, A Very Large Jigsaw Puzzle

 

Part of this project included the customer sending a representative to our shop towards the end to facilitate in final assembly.  As you can see in the picture, there are many components to this project - both parts we are custom producing, and parts we were buying, such as motors, gauges, linear rails, bushings, sensors, video screens, and other electronic equipment.  However, this is when the customer informed us they would not be able to send someone to our shop and we would have to assemble it on our own.  We had most of the drawings from the customer, but not all, and we basically had to complete a very large jigsaw puzzle consisting of hundreds of parts, and do this in a short amount of time.  This is where Ram Precision differentiates itself from our competitors.  Some companies could make these parts, but we had to assemble this whole machine from very little information.  This is where our knowledgeable employees embraced the challenge, and with their electronics and mechanical backgrounds and experience, we were able to successfully assemble this machine to the customer’s satisfaction.  We did such a good job that the customer ordered 6 more after this one.
